Am I too possessive of ... my garbage can?

Claire and I recently discovered that the neighbors were dumping their trash in our garbage can outside.

Okay, that's a lie.

Claire discovered it.

We had previously discussed on multiple occasions that our garbage can sure did fill up fast {too fast, to be honest}, but just figured the other tenants in the basement sometimes threw it in our can. And considering one of those tenants downstairs is my little sister, I was okay with that. And the other couple? The husband takes the garbage cans out to the street and does a slew of other kind things, so, that's okay too.

But the neighbors? The neighbors we don't know? Pff.

Honestly, if they would have asked, I wouldn't have a problem. But they didn't. And I think I have a problem because it would never cross my mind to dump my trash in someone else's receptacle. One, it would fill up the garbage so they couldn't use it and two, they actually have to pay for those services. I would never feel comfortable just mooching off of someone else {well, besides my parents, obvi}. ;)

I really want to say something to the neighbors, in the form of a humorous note on the trash receptacle {or something of the likes}. But my question is, am I too possessive of my trash receptacle? Is this one of those situations where you just "let it go"? I do tend to have a habit of speaking my mind in these types of situations. But is that best?

For realz, what would YOU do?

Random note, putting trash in other peoples bins is technically illegal. It's call theft of services, but it's rarely enforced.

I had a neighbor who would do that when my bins were up next to my house. I got a pigs head from a butchers and filled the can almost to the top with boxes and put the pig head on top, mistakenly thinking it would freak them out when they went to crap in their dominos boxes and bags of the stinkiest garbage...wrong.

The next morning I when out and the pig head was gone but there were trash bags full of diapers crammed in my bin. I still have no idea what happened to the pig head, but thankfully those neighbors moved.

"cram" not crap, although some days I was sure they were crapping in at least some of the garbage by the smell.

ugh. Annoying neighbors are the worst! Our next door neighbor's car alarm goes off almost every single night when I'm trying to put Reese down. It honks at least 20 times and makes me angry! I hope your neighbors stop inviting themselves to use your garbage cans. I like the above comment about the pig head. haha

So. I'm really sad I didn't win. :(
But. I would not let them use my garbage can! You pay for it, you have the rights to humorously put them in their place. That is my opinion. Plus it is extra dramatic and more fun hehe.

Haha we had the same problem while our house was being built. We had to pay for a huge dumpster on site for construction waste and people would come drop off their trash instead of taking it to the dump. Somebody filled it with old rolls of carpet one day. Made me SO mad! If your garbage gets pretty full and they aren't leaving you enough room I'd say something about it. If it's not really a problem I'd leave it alone. I will admit after Christmas one year I ran out on garbage day and filled my neighbors' recycling garbage can with cardboard boxes. In my defense it was minutes before the garbage truck arrived and I figured they had put everything in it that they were going to, and it was out on the street.

you are not possessive. People are stupid. Because I live by the fairgrounds, we get all sorts walking past our home in the summer. I see people detour - walk UP our driveway to our house and put stuff in our cans- which actually I'm ok with (better there than the ground), but what REALLY chaps my hide is when they throw garbage in the recycling bin, or pop cans in the green waste....ARE WE ANIMALS?????
