My favorite pirate ...

Craig Decker
November 22, 1982 - July 5, 2008

Before the eight o'clock hour this morning I received news that my dear friend, Craig Decker, had been in an accident at Utah Lake over the weekend. He was out boating with his family when an oar fell into the lake and Craig jumped in to retrieve it. Craig never resurfaced. His body has yet to be located.

Craig was one of the most remarkable people I had ever met. All he really ever wanted to do was to make a difference in this world. A little over a year ago he lost his hand in a firework accident. One of the first things he told me after he lost his hand was, "Mindy, I am so grateful I had bought that firework. If I hadn't, someone else would have and they would have blown up their hand." Some say that such a tragedy builds such amazing character - not Craig - he already had it.

He absolutely had the best attitude about everything ... After he got fitted for a hook on his amputee arm, he threw a pirate party. He said, "When life gives you lemons you make lemonade. When life gives you a hook, you throw a pirate party." He always joked that his hand took the early bus back to Heaven.

And now, he has too.

The world is a better place because Craig Decker lived in it. We should all live to leave every place better because we were there. Thank you for teaching me that, Craig. I love you and I will never forget you. We all miss you so much. I am so grateful I was blessed to be called your friend.

____
Craig posted several videos on Youtube to help other amputees learn how to do things with only one hand: Opening a jar, typing with one hand, and tying shoe with one hand.

He also had a blog where you can see his amazing spirit and optimism even through trialing times. This post is my favorite: 7 Lessons Learned from Fireworks.

Thank you for posting this information. I never worked with Craig at EFY but he seems like such an amazing guy. I heard about the boating accident over the weekend, but didn't know who it was. I am sorry for the loss of your friend. He really seemed incredible.

that was a great post. Thanks for sharing it. And, it's crazy that you had been thinking about him all last week. Same thing happened to us. On Saturday, we were hanging out with Brandon's family and he was telling a story about one of his friends from EFY that blew off his hand with a firework. I asked, "Who was that?" And he said, "Craig". "Decker?!?!" I asked (I had no idea! Since it's been 2 years since EFY for me). And he said, "Yeah. He worked in the office with me, and came back in the office the week after he blew it off and just joked about it." I was shocked. But, it reminded me of silly Craig Decker. And I thought to myself, "I think I'll go home and add him on my Facebook page."
Small, simple story. But crazy how the Lord must know somehow about those people we know and love, and how we can have memories of them put in our minds before we realize how precious those memories will be.

Craig rocks.

I didn't even know Craig lost his hand! I'm so behind with keeping up on things. For as little time as I knew him, I could tell Craig really was a great guy. I'm very sorry to hear this news...

Thanks for this post! I was having a rough day and reading your post helped me realize how blessed I truly am. Sometimes it's easy to feel sorry for myself when really there is so much I have to be grateful for. Thank YOU for being such a big blessing in my life. My prayers are with you and the Decker family.

Hey, Mindy! I'm so glad you found my blog so we can keep in touch! I can't believe this story about Craig! I was trying to think of how I would handle losing my hand, and it involve some sincere thoughts that included prolonged sadness. What an example to take the unexpected direction and throw a pirate party! That's incredible. I looked up articles about it and am so impressed with the person he was and wish I had known him. Lucky you.

I hope everything is going well, Mindy!!

HELLO! (Yes, I am already liking this "Hello party" idea) I think you could steal my entire blog if you want. Not just a post...have at it! But, I didn't write the quotes down word for word, that was why I wrote "Said something like this...", but my "Rainman-esque" abilities sometimes allow me to remember things. Not verbatim. But maybe close. Maybe.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. He seemed like a truly amazing person and I am sorry I never met him. Because of him though, I plan on adopting his 7 philospies of life. I read about them on Jill's blog.
